Safety Intelligence

Too much data, too little action: How can health and care organisations use safety intelligence more intelligently?

Background

The NHS wants to improve patient safety by creating better ways to bring together different types of safety information. Right now, there are lots of separate systems for collecting safety data, which makes it harder to get a clear picture of what’s happening.

Methods

This project is looking at how safety information is currently gathered and used in the NHS by reviewing documents and speaking to people in healthcare organisations. We are engaging with staff, patients, and other key groups to understand what they need from future safety systems. Using this feedback, we’ll co-design improved ways of collecting and using safety information and test these ideas at a pilot site.

Intended Impact

We’ll share what we’ve learned with NHS leaders, policy makers, and the public to support the health service to make better use of safety information to make services safer for patients.

This project runs from January 2026 to January 2028.
